2023 Donruss Optic: Stroud's Rated Rookie in Chromium
2023 Donruss Optic is the chromium home of C.J. Stroud's Rated Rookie — the third core rookie family alongside Prizm and Select. Here's what the base card, the parallels and the autos are, and how to buy them safely.
2023 Donruss Optic is the third pillar of C.J. Stroud’s core rookie run — the chromium companion to Panini Prizm and Panini Select. It’s where Stroud’s Rated Rookie design meets the reflective Prizm-style finish, which is exactly why Optic sits in the conversation with the other flagship chromium families rather than with the paper base sets.
Why this set matters for Stroud collectors
- It carries Stroud’s rookie-season Rated Rookie — Donruss’s signature rookie designation — in a chromium finish that collectors chase harder than the paper Donruss version.
- The Holo / Silver and named colored parallels form a full rainbow, so scarcity (and price) climbs sharply as you move from base to numbered colors.
- High-grade copies (PSA 10 / BGS 9.5) command strong premiums, because the reflective Optic surface shows edge and corner wear easily and is tough to keep flawless.
- Optic also carries Rated Rookie autographs, a natural pairing with the broader Stroud autographs list.

Find your card: #244, and the number to not confuse it with
The base Optic Rated Rookie reads #244 on the back — confirmed against the published 2023 Donruss Optic Football checklist (re-read 24 August 2026), which also places his Downtown! case hit at #2 in a 20-card run. That’s easy to mix up with paper 2023 Panini Donruss, where Stroud’s Rated Rookie is #339 — same rookie designation, same 2023 release, but a different product on different stock trading in a different market. Paper Donruss has no free published checklist we can reach, so treat the #339 as listing-attested rather than checklist-verified, and read the number off the card itself. If a listing just says “Rated Rookie,” check whether the card is chromium (Optic, #244) or paper (Donruss, #339) before you compare its price to anything. The what’s-it-worth guide has the full card-number table across every 2023 Stroud product.
The parallels, briefly
- Base Rated Rookie #244 — the accessible entry point to an Optic Stroud rookie (for the cheaper cardboard version, see the paper Donruss Rated Rookie review).
- Holo — the unnumbered chromium parallel; scarcer than base and the first real step up.
- Green Velocity, Blue Scope, Purple Shock and Blue Hyper — named unnumbered colored parallels on the Optic chromium stock; distinct finishes, not serial-numbered.
- Serial-numbered colors — the numbered parallels are the true chase, where the printed serial is the print run and prices climb fastest as that number shrinks.
The exact parallel drives most of a card’s value, so read the color and any serial number before you compare comps. The full parallel breakdown covers this ladder set by set alongside Prizm’s rainbow and Select’s tiered Concourse/Premier/Club Level prizms.
Buying it safely
Stroud rookies are heavily counterfeited, and Optic’s chromium look is a common target for reprints. For anything beyond a low-grade raw base copy, buy graded (PSA or SGC) so both authenticity and condition are guaranteed. When comparing prices, use sold comps rather than asking prices — and match the exact parallel, since a base Rated Rookie and a numbered color version of the “same” card can trade orders of magnitude apart.

For the premium tier, the 2023 National Treasures review documents his rookie-year relics — and why the Stroud NT Rookie Patch Auto collectors search for is not on the checklist — while the 2023 Contenders review explains why he has no Rookie Ticket autograph.
